The small village of Buoux (120 inhabitants) is at the very heart of the Provence of Giono, central to the Luberon area, with the most beautiful villages just minutes away. There is a cafe and a restaurant.
The town of Apt which a 10 minutes drive down the hill, and the close villages of Bonnieux, Lourmarin, and Saigon all have fine restaurants, local markets, and shopping. Several wineries offer wine tasting, and museums are numerous. Various concerts and festivals are taking place all through the season.
Not to be missed is a visit of the fort of Buoux, which dates from medieval times, and offers dramatic sceneries in the midst of cliffs and rocks of the vallon of Aiguebrun. Dont' forget to take water along, and possibly a picnic. Buoux is a walking and hiking paradise. You can walk right from the gite to the goat cheese farm, to the village, or down the Seguins through an ancient stone paved Roman road. If you are courageous enough, you can walk back up to Sivergues, a very small and beautiful village in the hills of the Luberon.
If you like road biking, the roads are small with little traffic and well paved. One thing wonderful about bicycling in Provence is that the next village with a fountain, cafe, bakery or restaurant is never far away, a few kilometers at most. Still this is hilly country and you will have to use your small brackets and be patient. Enjoy the magnificent views of Mont Ventoux, the giant of Provence, and one of the most respected climb of Tour de France, or attempt a climb yourself. Mountain biking is also privileged with numerous single track trails cross country.
Horse back riding, ballooning, climbing are other possible activities. The cliffs of Buoux are famous for rock climbing, but they can be hot in the summer.
A little further away, you can visit landmarks of Provence, such Fontaine de Vaucluse and it river coming out of the rock, the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the city of Aix-En-Provence, or even take a day trip to the sea to Cassis and its white cliffs called Calanques.
